Ep 82: 3 reasons some people never hit 6 figures

In today’s episode I’m going to dive into 3 of the top reasons why so many people never hit 6 figures… 

Now, I’m not here to say that needs to be everyone’s goal — it doesn’t. And I’m definitely not saying that it’s better to earn one amount over another. I’m talking about the people who want their business to grow and reach more people and to scale…

But, no matter how much they’re working, and despite all the blood, sweat and tears they’re putting into their business…

Their business stays stuck in no man’s (no profit) land. Which is a stressful and heartbreaking place to be. 

But, I’ve got two pieces of exciting news!

And now, back to those pesky 3 reasons why some people never hit 6 figures…  

Reason #1: Their model sucks…

By business model, I mean their chosen structure around what their offers are gonna be, and how they’re going to offer and deliver them. 

To give you a real world example of this, my very first online business was a fashion and lifestyle site called Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily, which I started back in 2007. All our revenue came from selling ad space on the site, which was the business model I was familiar with, having a background in magazines as a creative. That’s just how I knew to make money back then: you create content, build an audience and then you monetise. 

I go into this story in far more depth in the episode, so definitely give that a listen. But, essentially, after a couple of years I realised that the business model I’d started sucked. 

For me, and what I want out of my own business. 

And so when I say a business model sucks, I mean firstly, that it’s not designed to be something that’s easy to monetise and make profit from. And secondly, that it’s not designed to give you the kind of business you actually want to create for your life. 

So when it comes to choosing a good business model, you need to know what you want.

Everyone is unique. Your skills are unique. The way you want to show up is going to be unique. 

And this is why we spend Day #1 of 6-Figure School, figuring out what kind of business you actually want. Not just pulling an ego-based income out of the air. Rather what kind of work makes you happy? What kind of lifestyle do you want? If you want a team, what do you want your team to be like? 

It’s through this process that you’re going to be able to work out which kind of marketing is going to be right for you, which kind of funnels and even which kind of launching will be right for you. 

Because if you don’t know where you’re headed, you’re going to end up in the wrong place. 

Reason #2: They never stick to anything…

Reason number two is that they never stick to anything! This is also known as ‘Shiny New Marketing Tactic Syndrome.’

Which basically means they’re changing their marketing strategies (and offers) almost as often as they’re changing their underwear.

So for example, you might see someone on the internet talking about a ‘Shiny New Marketing Tactic’ and get excited and decide ‘THIS must be it!” And then set about making it happen in your business…

…But it’s more work than it looks on instagram. And it’s maybe even a slower burn…

It’s just not doing what you hoped it would, as fast as you wanted it to. 

Then…what’s that? Oh my, it’s another ‘Shiny New Marketing Tactic’…

And so, you drop what you’re doing, and start the whole process again. 

The problem with this is you’re not ever allowing enough time for you to tweak and experiment and make sure your messaging is right, that your sales page is converting etc. So you’re never going to get those results. 

And with all of this time and effort, you’re keeping yourself stuck in the beginner phase. You are not allowing yourself to move from beginner through learning into mastery.

And mastery is where that success is. 

The other part of this is the numbers. (Of course, it’s me!) But with every strategy you need to know your current numbers and what you are actually measuring the results against. What you measure, you can improve.  

So again, that’s why we have some amazing calculators inside 6-Figure School. 

Because once you’ve designed your dream and what you wanna do, we break it down and switch to the other side of the brain. How many sales do you need to make? Is that something that feels good? 

So then you can see that your model is going to both emotionally and financially work for you. 

A last word on this… all of this is just fear dressed up in a shiny dress. 

Fear is wanting to keep you somewhere familiar. So it has you chasing strategies to keep you stuck in this cycle of never improving, never moving forward, always staying stuck at the start. 

And you don’t want to stay stuck at the start, right? 

Reason #3: They treat their biz like a hobby + don’t invest…

And the third main reason some people never reach 6 figures is because they’re afraid to invest. 

Essentially, they’re treating their business like a hobby, rather than a business. 

A lot of people think they can’t spend money on their business until it starts making money. But that’s just not how businesses work. You can’t treat it like a hobby. You’ve got to invest in your business like a business if you want it to grow. 

I don’t mean go out there and bankrupt yourself. Don’t go and get a credit card and get yourself into crazy amounts of debt in order to start your business. 

What I’m talking about here is sitting down and working out where you can afford to invest. 

Where will you see a good return on that investment? It might be outsourcing 5 hours worth of work each week and gaining back that 5 hours back to spend on growing your business. Or it could be in upgrading your tech, so that you spend a bit of money each month on something that will save you time and give your customers a better experience.

Or it could even be in coaching, and fast-tracking your business instead of trying to Google your way through. Maybe for you it could be upskilling, and taking courses, all of these are business investments that bring a good return.
